My son was invited to a classmates birthday party at Rebounderz, in Jenison. When I was a kids there was the roller skating rink, these days there are so many new activities for kids to try and do. I’m both jealous and feeling old. I think the kids worked off a lot of energy today and will be sleeping well.

After discovering the realities of seclusion and restraint with our autistic daughter at school my wife an I are learning more about the realities of our schools and culture in how kids with special needs are being handled. We don’t disagree that something needs to be done, but there are alternatives that are safer and better for everyone. A recent podcast, LOMAH Special Needs Podcast (#39 – Restraint & Seclusion of Special Needs Individuals), that my wife an I listened gave very compelling alternatives. So I just witnessed my 6 year old daughter count backwards from 90 to zero. I’m constantly amazed at how smart she is. Not to mention that she is already reading at a 2nd grade level.
My daughter knows exactly how to send email on our Chromebooks and managed to do so, sending an email to my wife, without any prior direction from me. #kids #technology #parenting #gmail #email #education To provide some context, our home network and devices are all pretty well locked down and managed. Our 7 & 9 year old’s don’t have complete free reign to do whatever they want, at least without bounds. Additionally, their elementary school uses Google for Education and they get school email addresses starting at 3rd grade. My kids have experience and access to a lot of technology, both at school and at home. I’m a pretty big tech geek, given I’ve been a programmer and general IT person for the past 25…
I love that our family has a membership to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. We can spend hours their with the kids. We audio hey the benefit of their exchange program where our membership gets us into additional places like the Grand Rapids Public Museum and John Ball Zoo.
