New Well in Waterloo, Traveling to Freetown

Today was pretty easy-going as we packed up at the hotel in Makeni to head to Waterloo & Freetown, making the first step towards the trek home.

We had a nice long ride to Waterloo where we were going to see some of the final drilling stages of a new well.

The well was being put in right near a school in a very poor area of Waterloo. Since it was near a school, and want looked like a community “park” there were a lot of kids around. I think there were a lot of people in general because of watching the well drilling.

We’re there for about 3.5 hours before we started to see some water flowing from the well.

They eventually got the new well casing set and began applying air to start the flushing process. At that point we got a nice mist of water from the well hole.

We eventually got back in our vehicles and headed to Freetown for supper and our new hotel.

On the way to supper we drove by the area that suffered the terrible mud slides last fall. We had a couple people from last year’s Sierra Leone team help out during that crisis.

We enjoyed a meal together out at a local Freetown restaurant. It was pretty good food, of course I had the fish.

We also saw some beautiful landscapes along the ocean on our way to the hotel.

After arriving at the hotel and getting settled in our rooms we met with Saidu Kanu, the Country Director for World Hope in Sierra Leone. He gave us a overview of what to expect on Friday and Saturday before returning to the States.

Once Saidu left we enjoyed some time outside hanging out by the pools and ocean.

Our hotel is pretty nice once again for going on a missions trip to Africa.

On Friday we will be visiting with the Enable The Children program in Freetown. I’m looking forward to meeting Evelyn, a woman with a special needs daughter, that my wife met last year and has been in contact with. I expect it to be another impactful day.

Focus And Determination Required For This Training Run

Today’s training run was an intense interval run that pretty much required my complete focus. I only had 30 seconds to “recover” between my 6 minute long 8 minutes/mile pace intervals, and there were 8 of those. I had quite a few misses, and I was short on my final distance by about .02 miles, but overall I still knocked it out with a good time. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun #RiverBankRun

    Attempting To Follow The Plan

In an effort to actually take into consideration the things I read about running, and specifically training, I tried to slow things down today. I was still a bit faster than the training plan called for today but then it also felt like I was barely exerting myself, which is also kind of the point with slowing down and actually training my body and not just pounding on it. An additional benefit of slowing things down are being able focus and my one-on-one time with God. It allows me to actually listen to the words of the music that is playing, and listen to God’s prompting. Today was less about bring up my, or others, needs but about simply being thankful for where I am…

    Day Of Visits And Experiences

We started our day at the World Hope International offices with introductions of some of the key staff that are involved with putting in wells. We also got briefed on some things to expect for the day and coming week. After our time meeting with the staff we got a tour of the drilling equipment and storage by Eugene. Eugene is from Nigeria and was brought to World Hope in Sierra Leone to lead the drilling teams. The tour included a lot of details on what the different equipment is used for in the process of drilling wells. There was so much I never realized went into drilling a well. After the tour we headed out to a village to dedicate a well that Hope…

Getting To The End Of Training, Where Have The Miles Gone

Nearing the end of the Thursday training runs, one more next week before the big #GRMarathon day. These short training runs go by quick that is for sure. The #HWI team still has some more to go on the fundraising. There is still a match going on so every dollar someone gives is really two. #Run4Water #WhyIRun Donate to Water – https://timn.me/2t9D4ne

Still Running, Starting A New Plan

I have still been running but just haven’t taken the time to post about them. I ran 13.1 miles last Saturday and around 7 Miles on Tuesday, I did take a break Monday in order to get some extra sleep after a late night. This morning I had another interval training run this morning that kicked my but, however I still ended with more miles then estimated so I it was not all bad. I had actually started a new training plan since my 15K at the River Bank Run isn’t happen. No sense in building up my distance when there isn’t actually a race to run. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun
