What To Do About Sugar?

“sugar doesn’t just sweeten your foods, it also messes with your biology, making you cranky, overweight, and, in a word, sick.” – Sugar Free: The Complete Guide to Quit Sugar & Lose Weight Naturally by Sonoma Press

Pie, donuts, cookies, candy, ice cream they all sound so good and make my mouth start to water. What I do know is that just about 2 years ago my wife and I began a lifestyle change that included what we were eating. One thing we began to cut out in large part was sugary foods. After losing over 100 pounds I can say that it was all worth it.

Unfortunately, the cravings for those sugary desserts have not completely gone away. Bring on the holidays and all of the sweets that tend to accompany them all and it’s a recipe for disaster and challenges. About a month ago I stopped tracking my eating in detail and allowed my sugar intake to increase, luckily I’ve stuck with my running, otherwise I think I would be in a much worse place with my weight than the 6 pounds I’ve gained over the last couple of months. It’s pretty pathetic when you resort to drinking warm apple cider vinegar and honey to soothe a painful stomach ache that you caused by throwing caution to the wind with your eating. Throw in life stresses with the fact that you are historically a stress eater and it’s not a good place to be.

Die, Sugar.

I saw a developer I follow post to his blog something not long ago about his own struggles with health, and the havoc that sugar had caused him. He’s on a path to drop all sugars from his diet, though I think he’s going to the extent of dropping fruit too. I recently picked up this eBook for free on Amazon and started reading it today. I think I too am going to get back to a place of cutting out processed and refined sugars as much as possible. It’s not going to be easy but beyond the potential of gaining weight I don’t want to deal with the other health issues attributed to the consumption of refined sugars.

“consuming refined sugar and excess carbohydrates can lead to mood swings, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, fatigue, compromised immune function, anemia, depression, anxiety, acne, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer.” – Sugar Free: The Complete Guide to Quit Sugar & Lose Weight Naturally by Sonoma Press

This is going to be a pretty tough next step in my health journey. The temptations are going to be surrounding me all the time. I think I’ll be looking forward even more to my trip to Sierra Leone Africa even more for the fact that access to all the processed sugary foods will be pretty limited.

    Challenging Road To Water

For many even the road to a dirty water source is a treacherous one. A well placed well brings both clean water, and safety, to a village in Africa. I’m still looking for some additional partners to commit to the final $255 of my goal. Will you be that partner? https://timn.me/2Kx7NEr #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun #GRMarathon In the village of Ronkorhun they must travel over a rickety bridge, during the rainy season when the creek is flowing, to get to a hole in the ground where they collect their water. Can you imagine risking your safety to get water that can make you sick? That’s the situation many of those in Afeica are in. This morning was another speed work morning. On top of that I…

Setting up a Web Server Using Docker on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Ampere arm64 Always Free Instance

After successfully migrating from a #DigitalOcean Droplet for my #Mastodon instance I decided to take advantage of the remaining resources still available on #OracleCloud to migrate my web hosting as well. I’m going to be taking a different approach, basically because of the #arm64 setup, and using #Docker for running most of my hosting setup. This post serves as an on-going guide to that setup.

First Ice Beard Of The Winter

Despite the stormy winter weather I was able to make some decent time. Having cleats that go over my running shoes is a huge help with any sort of snow and ice I encounter. The real problem was having my running glasses getting fogged up so often from the cold wind. I enjoyed some worship music while running despite most of my focus being on the ground in front of me. I spent a little time praying for a friend’s family due to some major medical issues. I think if I can manage this mornings weather I’ll be ready for the #GroundhogDayMarathon and whatever I get hit with. #HWI #Run4Water Donate to Wells – https://timn.me/2t9D4ne

First Saturday Long Run After The 2019 GR Marathon

When a village is chosen to receive a well World Hope doesn’t just go install it and leave without investing time into the village. It becomes the responsibility of the village, through support from World Hope, to protect and care for, their well through the oversight of a leadership team from their village. When you partner with #HWI you can be certain that your gift will be impacting generations through a sustainable water program. #Run4Water #WhyIRun #GRGus Make A Impact, Give Today: https://timn.me/2Kx7NEr This morning was my first Saturday morning long run since completing the 2019 #GRMarathon and I felt pretty good afterwards. I got a little concerned a few weeks ago when I started having leg cramps at like mile 5. I think that…

Would You Rather…Run In 90 Degree Heat Or A Foot Of Snow?

There wasn’t a foot of snow this morning, it was probably more like 6 inches, but it still made for a tough go of it as you still need good traction to move. I almost wiped out on a slick spots in the Family Faire parking lot towards the end of my run. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun #GRGus In regards to “would you rather”, my preference is winter running over hot summer running any day. It’s significantly easier getting yourself warmed up by running than it is to get cooled down. Then again it does matter what weather conditions you might expect for any race you plan on running. Given I’ll be running the Groundhog Marathon at the beginning of February the more terrible winter runs…
