Health Challenges of a Desk Job

Gaiam Balance Ball Chair, Black Gaiam via @amazon

I saw this link today on this fancy device for an exercise ball to make it a chair. My co-worker has an exercise ball in his office he sometimes sits on. This Balance Ball Chair seems a little bit of a half attempt at the whole concept, seems like you’d lose some of the benefits of just using the exercise ball itself, but at least you have less of a chance of falling off right. ?

This really touches on the challenges of keeping a healthy lifestyle when you have a desk job. Things like standing desks are another tool that has become popular because of the whole office health risk issue. Something I started early last year was to make a point of getting outside and walking a couple times during the day at work. With the colder winter months, and a pretty demanding project right now, seem to be making it hard to manage that. A continual challenge to stay healthy. I’ll be very interested to follow my office job brethren and hear about what’s working for them.

Training During The Winter, Treadmill Alternatives

So up until the end of December I’d been sticking out running outside. Since the snow began to fly I’ve taken things indoors on the dreaded treadmill. 😉 Currently the treadmill running has been thanks to a great 3-month deal on a gym membership. Once we move into our new house in February/March I’ll be on our own treadmill, which we picked up cheap(used) before Christmas. I’m planning on joining some of the Hope Water Project – Team Daybreak group runs starting this Saturday, which brings me to considering what it means to run in the cold. I came across this Runner’s World post today that has many ideas on ways to keep training in the Winter months, or cold climates. I think the most…

Best 5K Yet, But What’s The Goal

Another day of enjoying the warmer outside weather. My pace has significantly increased and the last 2 days I’ve done a standard run with no intervals. Well actually, I was doing a Ghost Run, which the whole purpose is to best you’re previous time. I’m very happy with my progress however the question still remains for me, “What is my goal?”. My plan right now is to run the 5/3 Riverbank Run coming up this Spring. Since I’m already running a 5K at each workout then perhaps working on my time is where I should be focusing my attention. I still think I want to do the Grand Rapids Half Marathon this fall so I will need to do serious training for that distance. I…

5K Training Run – Need to Slow it Down

I haven’t been posting my runs in awhile, just for the pure fact of the extra time it requires to post it to my blog. It’s just faster using Endomondo’s share feature to post to social media rather than turning off the social media sharing of my blog posts. Today’s training run, day 2/week 3, was a slow pace day. Was very hard to stick to the show pace, as evidenced by my time. It was supposed to be a 11:42 min/mi rune but it was more like 10:00 min/mi. ? [endomondowp type=’workout’ workout_id=’872608651′]
