Saturday Morning Groundhog Day Marathon Course Training Run

Knocked out 18 miles this morning with my running partner. We decided to take on the Groundhog Day Marathon course near Millennium Park, 4 laps of the course. It was a good practice run. I’m glad we still have another month n of training to go as I could definitely feel the last couple of miles of just the 18. I thought the weather was pretty good for an early morning run.

Completing My 2020 Virtual Grand Rapids Half Marathon

To be honest, this morning didn’t feel like marathon day. It pretty much felt like any other morning I get up while it’s still dark, and everyone else is asleep, to go for a run. #GRMarathon #Run4Water #HWI This year has been a challenging one for running, and races, that is for sure. Most races were cancelled, postponed, or changed to virtual. My training has been all on my own, and when the pandemic hit I stopped sharing all of my runs on social media. Life wasn’t “business as usual” and I really couldn’t maintain a facade like it was. I did commit to running my 2020 Grand Rapids Half Marathon as a virtual run despite the offer to defer to next year. This morning…

A Better Tuesday Long Run, Working On Endurance

In Sierra Leone, Africa, many have no choice but to endure miles of travel to access water, and for many that water isn’t safe but they don’t have any other options. The need for clean water it’s great, and through Hope Water International, progress is being made, but we’re not done yet. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun #RiverBankRun Join Hope Water to bring clean water Africa: https://timn.me/2Kx7NEr This morning I really worked on slowing my pace to fall in line with the training plan. I had a much better pace today than a few days ago. It was definitely a focus on endurance than speed. In some ways slowing down is more work than it is to speed up. I’d like to see if I continue to…

Stepping Back To Step It Up

As I keep working on getting back into a regular running routine the part that is also key is the “why” behind it. The mission of raising money, and awareness of the need, for wells in Africa is not complete. That is a message that doesn’t end during the “off” season. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun Help Continue The Mission: https://timn.me/2Kx7NEr I decided to cut back my miles today with the hope of preventing leg cramps. I didn’t have it initially in mind to kick the speed up but run started so well that’s what ended up happening. The last mile was a bit tougher which brought my average pace down, but I was still plenty happy with how I did compared to the day before.

Last Full Training Week Before The Big Day

Pretty much unheard of for me today ended up being an evening training run, and an #Endomondo one at that. I started off way better than the start of a typical morning run, but given I’ve had a whole day to get my body moving that sort of makes sense. It was still pretty warm and humid, though I really appreciated the occasional breeze. I can’t wait until the temps cool down more. It did get me thinking about what those in Africa have to deal with, just walking, to go for miles just to get a container of water. #HWI #Run4Water #WhyIRun Donate to Water – https://timn.me/2t9D4ne I did spend a lot of time thinking about my former camp co-worker Jon and his family….

Experiencing Enable The Children, Finishing at the Beach

Today was an amazing experience with Enable The Children. It was both heartbreaking and encouraging to see what is happening for special needs children in Sierra Leone. We started off the day having breakfast at th the hotel with a visit from Anna Vines who is the director of the ETC program at World Hope. She gave us some background into the program and helped set expectations for the day. After breakfast we met a few of their staff that were going to be taking us around to visit children. Paul Jangba was George, Mike, and my “guide” for the day. I was blown away by the love, care, and compassion Paul showed to the children we met. He only has a High School education…
